Walking

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
Group email: Walking group
When: On Fridays
Second Friday of each month
Venue: Various

The Group is suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness who enjoy hiking a few miles. Walks are between 3 and 6 miles, 2-3 hours duration.

Often we take advantage of public transport to access our walks and when this is not possible we car share so there is no reason for anyone to be excluded from a walk.

Members are sent full details of the upcoming walk by email beforehand which will give them the opportunity to decide on its suitability. Details will include the terrain and the possibility of refreshments on the walk. Waterproofs and stout walking footwear are essential.

Walks are undertaken at the individual member’s own risk. Please talk to Rosie Schild, Group Leader whose contact details are above if you have any concerns as she will have checked out the walk. Carefully consider our Personal Risk Assessment before attending.

February’s walk was “Dams to Darnley”

Earlier walks

Our August walk was a circular one from Croy. We travelled along the Forth and Clyde canal to Twecher Bridge then climbed up to Croy Hill to see part of the Antonine Wall and down again to Auchinstarry where we had lunch. Then back to Croy .

We reluctantly postponed our July walk on account of the high temperatures.

Our June walk from Preswick to Troon was approximately 5 miles . We had a great day, it wasn’t particularly sunny but a warm breeze helped our progress.

Our walk for May took us from Anniesland to Speirs Wharf along the Forth and Clyde Canal. It was a beautiful day and we stopped just before the end to enjoy lunch at a local cafe .

For the April walk we travelled to Chatelherault Country Park. It was a beautiful day and everything looked its best. At the start we passed the ruins of Cadzow Castle which dates back the time of Robert the Bruce, and crossed the Duke’s Bridge. Then we encountered the Cadzow Oaks dating back to 1444. This walk began and finished at the visitor’s centre in the stunning Lodge build by William Adam.

In February nine of us enjoyed a walk around the Gorbals. We started and finished at the library in Crown Street. En route we passed the Rose Garden , with its beautiful rose statue, lots of interesting architecture; the Southern Necropolis, a Victorian cemetery, and St Francis, a former friary where we had a tour . It was a beautiful day which helps, but I can’t claim that I arranged that!
